What we said beforehand
Al Khaleej host Al Riyadh at their home ground in the Saudi Pro League on 7 September 2026. Al Khaleej sit 16th out of 18, three points from five games and already in the relegation places. Al Riyadh are 12th, four points from five games, also with a negative goal difference but a little higher up the table. Both clubs are fighting to climb out of the bottom half, and a win for either side could move them a place up or down the ladder. The numbers we have suggest Al Khaleej will score about 1.6 goals while Al Riyadh average 1.2, so the home side looks the stronger side on paper.
Al Khaleej have not been able to turn that paper strength into results lately. In their last three matches they lost 3-0 away to Neom SC, then suffered a 5-1 defeat at home to Al Hilal, and managed only a 1-1 draw away at Abha. That run gives them two defeats and one draw, with just two goals scored and nine conceded. They failed to find the net in the Neom SC game and have now endured two straight losses. The side played just four days ago, so fatigue could be a factor as they head into this fixture.
Al Riyadh’s recent form is a mix of highs and lows. Their last three outings saw a 5-0 loss away to Al Ahli, a 1-0 victory at home over Neom SC, and a 3-3 draw away at Al Shabab. Across those games they have scored four goals and let in eight, keeping one clean sheet and also being shut out in the Al Ahli loss. The win over Neom SC shows they can grind out a narrow result, while the draw with Al Shabab demonstrates they can score multiple goals. They played three days ago, so they also have a short turnaround before travelling to Al Khaleej.
When the two clubs have met before, the games have tended to produce several goals, with both sides finding the net in most encounters. Given the recent scores – Al Khaleej conceding heavily and Al Riyadh both scoring and conceding in equal measure – we expect another open contest. Both teams have shown they can score, but also that their defenses are leaky. A game with around three goals in total fits the pattern of their recent meetings and the goal expectations we have.
We pick Al Khaleej to win. The price of 2.25 matches our own view of the game and looks reasonable. Our chance of this result is about 45 per cent, which reflects the home side’s slight edge in the goal expectations and the fact that they are desperate to pick up points to climb out of the relegation zone. For the pick to go wrong, Al Riyadh would need to keep a clean sheet and score at least once, replicating the narrow 1-0 win they showed they can produce. If Al Khaleej fail to find the net again, the price would not have paid out.
