What to expect
Erbil host Diyah in a Iraq Stars League clash at the end of September. Erbil sit second in the 20-team table with 11 points from five games and a +5 goal difference. They are just one point behind leaders Al Zawraa and one point ahead of Al-Karma. Diyala sit a lowly 12th, also on five points but with a –1 goal difference. They are two points behind Al Minaa and level with Ghaz Al-Shamal SC. Both sides will be looking to move up the table – Erbil to keep the pressure on the top spot and Diyala to climb out of the lower half.
Erbil have been in good form lately. In their last three outings they beat Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya 2-0, then edged a 1-0 win over Al-Shorta, and followed that with a 3-1 victory against Al-Talaba. That run gives them six points and eight goals scored while conceding only one. The string of clean sheets and a solid goal tally shows they are comfortable at both ends of the pitch.
Diyala’s recent results have been mixed. They started with a 2-2 draw against Al-Naft, then suffered a 1-0 loss to Al-Hikma, and most recently were beaten 3-0 by Al-Karbala. The latest defeat was a heavy one, with Diyala failing to find the net while concedating three clear goals. The pattern points to a side that is struggling to score and is vulnerable defensively.
When the two clubs have met before, the games have tended to be low-scoring affairs, with the home side usually edging it. Given Erbil’s stronger recent record and the goal expectations of 1.5 for Erbil and 0.9 for Diyala, we expect a similar pattern – a modest number of goals and a narrow margin. Erbil should be able to control the match and keep Diyala at bay.
We pick Erbil to win. The numbers give Erbil about a 58 % chance of coming out on top and the price of 1.48 is shorter than our own reading, meaning the reward is modest but the risk is low. For us to be wrong, Diyala would need to find a sudden surge in scoring and tighten up defensively, turning the 3-0 loss into a competitive display. If that does not happen, Erbil’s form and position make them the cleaner choice.
