What we said beforehand

Forest Green host Gateshead at their ground in the National League on 12 September 2026. Forest Green sit seventh out of twenty-four, twelve points from seven games and a +1 goal difference. They are just inside the promotion places, two points behind Aldershot Town and level with Hornchurch below them. Gateshead are struggling near the bottom, having failed to win in their last four outings and sitting well behind the safety zone. Both teams played their previous matches seven days ago, so the form we see is fresh. The table shows what each side needs – Forest Green want to keep the pressure on the teams above them, while Gateshead hope to pick up any points to avoid a deeper slide.

Forest Green’s last eight games have been a mixed bag. They beat Hornchurch 1-0 away, then lost 2-1 to Altrincham at home, 2-0 to Fylde away and 3-0 to Boreham Wood at home. After that they turned it around with a 2-1 win away at Worthing and a 3-2 victory at home over Halifax. In those eight matches they have scored thirteen goals and let in twelve. They kept two clean sheets but also failed to find the net twice. Four of the games produced three or more goals and both sides scored in four of them. At home in the last four fixtures they have won two and lost two, showing they can be dangerous on their own turf.

Gateshead’s recent run has been far less encouraging. Their eight-game spell includes a 1-1 draw with Solihull at home, a 2-1 defeat away to Harrogate, a 1-0 loss at home to Sutton, a 3-0 away loss to Yeovil, a 2-0 home win over Woking and a 2-1 away defeat to Eastleigh. That gives them just one win and one draw from those games. They have scored six goals while conceding fifteen. They kept a single clean sheet but failed to score in three matches. Four of the games featured three or more goals and both teams scored in four of them. On the road they have lost four straight, so the trip to Forest Green will be a tough test.

When the two clubs have met before, Forest Green have generally had the upper hand. In the last four meetings Forest Green won three times and Gateshead once, with an average of 3.2 goals per game. The most recent encounter was on 28 February 2026, when Gateshead lost 0-2 at home. Those results suggest a game where Forest Green are likely to create chances and Gateshead may struggle to find the net.

We think Gateshead will score one goal or less. The chance of that happening is about seventy-two per cent in our view. The price of 1.30 is shorter than we feel the game deserves, which makes the bet look attractive. For our pick to fail, Gateshead would need to find the net twice, which would require a sudden improvement in a side that has not scored in three of its last eight games and has not won away in four. If they manage only a single goal or keep a clean sheet, our selection should be successful.
