How it turned out

We projected about 2.6 goals; the game finished with 1. We made Both teams to score 61%. It lost.

What we said beforehand

Bolton host Cardiff at the Championship ground on 12 September 2026. Both clubs sit at the bottom of the table, Bolton in 21st place with four points from six games and a goal difference of minus six. Cardiff sit just a spot above them in 20th, also on four points but with a slightly better goal difference of minus three. The two sides are separated by a single point and a place, while Derby County sit just above Cardiff and Bolton sit just below them. A win for either side could lift them out of the relegation zone, but a loss would leave them stuck at the bottom.

Bolton have not been able to turn things around in their last eight matches. Their most recent result was a 4-0 defeat away at Millwall, followed by a 3-2 loss away to Sheffield United and a 1-0 defeat at home to Lincoln. Before that they managed a 0-0 draw away at QPR, a 2-1 win at home over Preston and a 3-2 loss at home to Luton. In those eight games Bolton have scored ten goals and let in sixteen. They have kept only one clean sheet and have failed to find the net in three matches. Five of the games featured three or more goals and both sides scored in five of them. Their last three results have all been defeats.

Cardiff’s recent form is also poor. Their last eight outings include a 2-0 loss away to Portsmouth, a 2-1 defeat away at QPR and a 2-2 draw at home with Sheffield United. They then drew 2-2 away at Derby, 1-1 at home to Wrexham and suffered a 5-4 loss away to Mansfield. In those eight games Cardiff have scored sixteen and conceded fifteen. They have kept one clean sheet and have been shut out only once. Six of the matches produced three or more goals and both teams scored in six of them. Their last four road games have yielded no wins, one draw and three defeats.

The two clubs have split their recent head-to-head meetings, each winning one of the last two encounters. The games have been low scoring, averaging 1.5 goals, and the most recent meeting saw Cardiff win 2-0 at Bolton on 11 April 2026. Given the low scoring history but the fact that both sides have been involved in games with several goals, this fixture is likely to produce at least one goal for each side rather than a shut-out.

We think both teams to score is the best choice. Bolton are expected to score at least once in 78 % of their games and Cardiff in 67 % of theirs. Both sides have shown they can find the net even when they lose, and the recent head-to-head record suggests a goal on either end is possible. The price of 1.49 is shorter than our reading of the match, so it looks attractive. For our pick to fail, both teams would need to keep a clean sheet – a scenario that would require a very defensive game, which is unlikely given the number of goals in their recent matches.
