What to expect

Niger host Lesotho in an AFCON qualifier on 25 September 2026. Both teams are in the middle of the group table, but Niger sit a few points above Lesotho. A win for Niger would pull them a little closer to the automatic qualification spots, while Lesotho need the three points to keep any hope of moving out of the bottom half. On paper Niger look the stronger side – they are expected to score about 1.8 goals per game compared with Lesotho’s 0.8. The odds are 1.65 for a Niger victory, which matches our own view of the match.

Niger have been busy in their last few fixtures. They beat Tanzania 2-0, then drew 1-1 with Ghana and followed that with a 3-1 win over Sudan. Those three results give them six goals scored and only two conceded in the last three games. The run shows they can find the net regularly and keep a solid defence at the back. Their recent form suggests they are comfortable both at home and away.

Lesotho’s recent form is less encouraging. They lost 3-0 to Celtic, then fell 4-1 to Kilmarnock and most recently were beaten 2-0 by Botswana. In that last game they failed to create many chances and could only manage a single shot on target. The three matches add up to nine goals conceded and just one scored. The pattern points to a side that struggles to find the net and lets opponents score easily.

When the two sides have met before, the games have usually been low-scoring affairs with Niger edging out Lesotho. The pattern fits the numbers we have – Niger are likely to score, while Lesotho find it hard to break down a better defence. We expect a game where Niger control the tempo, create a few chances and get on the scoresheet early. Lesotho will probably sit deep, hoping to catch a break, but the odds are against them finding the net more than once.
